Now it says it so often that we have to pay attention to it and we have to understand that it was because of this excellent spirit that Daniel was singled out, sometimes for things that we would prefer not to go through, but at any rate he went through them and came out victorious.

So here we have, in chapter six, an episode that happens sometime after the Medes came into Babylon.

They came in, they dried out the riverbed, they came in underneath the walls, they broke into the king's palace and in a matter of minutes, literally and with minimum bloodshed, they executed King Belshazzar, the grandson of Nebuchadnezzar.

This was the king to whom the hand appeared writing on the wall and he was killed, and a man named Darius, who was a Mede, became the king over Babylon.

Now, a satrap is a administrator, kind of like a local judge or somebody like that, who would administer over a local region to be over the whole kingdom.

So each governor would have 40 satraps reporting to them, of whom Daniel was one.

So not only was he one of the three, but he was number one of the three, and the purpose of this was so that the king would have these three governors as a buffer between the satraps and him.

So 40 satraps would report to the governor and the governor would report to the king, and their purpose was that the king would suffer no loss, and we're going to find out later that that was a good purpose, because these other satraps and the king, other governors, had bad intents.
